Natural Latex Mattresses- The Healthy Choice from Bio Beds Plus
Our founders at Bio-Beds Plus have been in the Natural Furniture Components business for over 50 Years. In the 1980's while manufacturing innerspring mattresses they immediately noticed that they and their employees were sensitive to some of the chemicals in fabrics and polyurethane foams.
OUR HISTORY OF USING NATURAL MATERIALS IN MATTRESSES
At this time our founders were fortunate to be training furniture makers in developing Countries where Natural and Organic materials were still being used or readily available... materials such as Jute, Sisal, Bamboo, & (shredded coconut husks known as Coir.
OUR FOUNDERS used the shredded fiber from coconut husks in a very raw state on top of the innersprings of the mattress. Also used were inner linings made of Jute. 50 pound Jute bags previously containing Sugar were re-cycled for use in furniture. The use of foam was minimized and we were able to use Natural cotton layers instead. Surprisingly, these jute bags had been used hundreds of years before by resourceful individuals for making their clothes. Jute, being partially a textile fibre and partially a wood fibre, is considered a ligno-cellulose fibre. Not too comfortable for clothes , though!
THE FAMILY BUSINESS FROM 1918 AND THE SOURCING OF MATTRESS COMPONENTS
Our concept of fostering the growth of micro businesses making furniture in their garage or back yards was based on providing training and finance to these individuals. These furniture makers would then have employees of their own...perhaps a few years later as many as 100 employees. Each employee in turn might each support 10 of their family members.
Our founders were trained in a family business whose main trade - from as far back as 1918 - was the importation of fabrics from Belgium and other European Countries. The experience gained in the importation of commodities & components from all over the world proved to be of great benefit to them later on in their growing business.
For the last 15-20 years many mattress suppliers in North America started importing more furniture components from around the globe. Bio-Beds Plus owners were able to avoid many of the pitfalls some of which recent importers encountered. Pitfalls such as sourcing inferior materials containing downright toxic components. For example some new entrants in the bedding industry unknowingly imported memory foam off-gassing noxious fumes, due to Toxic fillers which some foreign suppliers used simply to obtain weight or volume in the foam.
In the case of Steel one had to be aware, as some Innerspring imports could contain sub-standard Steel.
The mattress springs would then be weakened, causing sagging.
Over a 100 year period dealing with electronics, appliances and furniture imports and at times finding issues with imported products we usually found a way of modifying and improving products . Constantly having to improve some imported products led us into manufacturing. For example importing radio's from Europe in the 1950's we upgraded capacitors in the power supply in the radio's before sending the units out. Importing sewing machines from Eastern Europe in the 1980's we did the same thing replacing the electric motors with French motors.
We had never promoted the fact that we made improvements on many products which we imported.
An interesting aside- a leading mattress retailer demanded that their mattress supplier examine one of our mattresses to see how we could possibly sell at such low prices. What a shock when their team, on cutting our mattresses open, found specifications had actually been exceeded and more material was used in our mattresses than we advertised !
As we'd never advertised or called attention to our modifications & improvements on products, the competitors were unaware of why our products sold so well. Our motto was simply Give more to the Customer than expected, Always keep your Customers Happy ! These are two examples of the hundreds of modifications that we made on imported appliances and furniture. It was always our founders belief that we should be able to bring to market items that were better than what were currently available in the price range and to provide the consumer with great quality at up to 40% discounts to the competition.
DUNLOP LATEX MATTRESSES
Our founders were in contact in the 1940's with owners of Rubber Tree Plantations and had always expressed interests in producing Latex Mattresses. Eventually, In 2005 Bio-Beds Plus founders began to use 100% Natural Latex in Mattresses and of course organic fabric. Bio-Beds Plus later included Organic Latex made with the Dunlop process although you can also custom order Talalay Latex. Talalay uses a more complicated manufacturing technique - more energy is used in the production of Talalay. Additionally, the density of the product is lower, due to the whipping of the mixture when air is introduced into the latex. Therefore the latex is lighter and doesn't have the durability of Dunlop.
There are several advantages with Talalay, however. Certain consumers will like the fact that they can get a soft comfort layer for the top layer of the mattress. Talalay is available in several more densities than Dunlop, so giving greater choices of firmness. Talalay Latex is more constant in density when measured at various points of the mattress.
There is an advantage of dealing with folks who have a a long history, not only in manufacturing but designing products for other Companies and dealing with reputable Global suppliers of furniture components... folks who understand what the customer is asking for, especially those suffering from multiple chemical sensitivities. A Mattress Retailer who understands that you, the customer are making an investment in a premium natural mattress . An 8 " thick Dunlop Latex Mattress should last in excess of 20 years.
IMPORTANT GOALS FOR HYPOALLERGENIC BEDDING :
Bio-Beds Plus has always looked at giving the customer what they ask for.
What you want in an organic mattress is simple. PURITY!
Basically a toxin free mattress with the comfort and support of Organic Latex and a GOTS certified fabric cover. There should also be a Natural fire retardant made from Natural Wool. Natural wool has an ignition temperature of 570 degrees. Due to its high nitrogen and water content it needs a lot of oxygen to ignite it, in fact more than is available. Wool simply smolders for a short time if ignited and then smothers itself. It will not even melt or drip if ignited. It won't produce the toxic gas that synthetics do when ignited. Avoid companies that are green washing and deal with ones that are specializing in Natural and Organic mattresses and bedding. Remember if it looks too good to be true it probably is.
Some mattresses have multiple layers of many different materials. Think of when you see on a product in the supermarket: a long list on the side of a package which tells you absolutely nothing which you can easily understand. With regard to a mattress it can be a lot of marketing hype and its more difficult to know which of these components could be toxic - a listing of many different components and a multitude of features. This can be very confusing! Don't just go by what sounds good or looks fancy. If you are really serious about health and have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) then go for something with a plain cover that is GOTS certified and preferably a cover which is undyed and unbleached. For the interior all you want and need is the Latex core for support & Latex comfort layer with some Natural Wool for the fire retardant. You could opt for a Vegan cover with no fire retardants. In terms of content go for fewer materials & greater purity of components. Be aware that both Natural Latex and Natural wool have Natural smells. These odour will dissipate on opening and using the product. Remember, Mattresses that have special fragrances added will have chemicals added. Synthetic chemicals such as Vanallin for example - which smells like vanilla. Bio-Beds Plus does not use components with chemically added fragrances.
LATEX MATTRESS AND TOPPER OFFERS
We usually have valuable offers. For example at the moment we are giving away an AllerAir air purifier with the purchase of our Sea Fan organic latex Mattress. We chose AllerAir because they use Activated Carbon Filters. The most important thing with their carbon filters is the weight. Many competitors are using just a few ounces of Carbon, AllerAir's activated carbon filter uses pounds of granular carbon to get rid of noxious chemicals, gases and odors. Activated carbon is known to efficiently treat airborne chemicals, gaseous pollutants, fumes and odors safely. Activated Carbon causes millions of holes and channels to open so making the material even more absorbent.
A UV GERMICIDAL LAMP can be added to many of our AllerAir units . The same technology used by the healthcare industry and for food storage warehouses, labs and other buildings. where microorganisms, bacteria, viruses or mold must be dealt with. UV works by halting reproduction of microorganisms , stopping their growth .
